What is the best Gluten Free food near Belfast?

There are a host of reasons why people need a gluten free diet. The main reason you may have heard is Coeliac. It is not an allergy, but an autoimmune disease, and eating gluten triggers it. There are many others living with allergies and intolerances, and some who make the lifestyle choice to avoid gluten.

Cross-contamination is a big worry for those dining out with a health related dietary restriction. Food outlets should take precautions when preparing and cooking food, such as using separate fryers and oil.

Something I believe many establishments could improve on- providing children's GF portions. We don't need 5 chicken goujons when 2/3 are plenty! We realise it may not always be cost effective for a small number of diners, but please consider the customer's lifetime value. Once those who need a certain diet find good food and service- they'll keep coming back and tell a whole community too!

Below is a list of places we've visited locally, in no particular order.  They've taken C's food restrictions seriously, or have been personally recommended to us from trusted sources. The great news is that most of these are not too far from Belfast!

 1. Little Wing, Whiteabbey and various locations

Their pizza is yummy, it's £1 extra for the gluten free base.  You won't feel you're missing out with their delicious dough. And obviously C won't benefit, but they even offer GF beer to wash it down with!

2. Freak Treats,  Antrim Road Belfast

Friendly staff are sympathetic to GF needs. They have some GF options available right away in store, but you can also call ahead, and they will make many of their treats and desserts on request!

3. Banger Dog, Belfast City Centre

We visited this outlet on it's opening weekend in the summer, as we saw on social media they catered for GF and vegans. The GF hotdog was really tasty, well worth a visit. C can't wait to go back!

4. The Corner House/ Fit Food Deli, Glengormley

With a delicious range of healthy beetroot wraps and delicious breakfast bagels, this allergy friendly outlet is the perfect brunch/ lunch spot.

5. The Barking Dog, Belfast

This well established eatery has a loyal customer base, and it's easy to see why. They provide amazing food and offer a wide variety to gluten free, lactose free and vegan diners.

6. Bob and Berts, various locations

We've tried Bob and Berts in Belfast and Lisburn and C loves that he has so many gluten free options. Extra credit due for providing the goujons as a children's meal, rather than just the adult portion!

7. 3 Forty -Seven Cakes

Recommended by many Coeliacs when I asked on the NI Business Facebook page, they have some amazing creations for your gluten free celebrations. Their 100% gluten free products are works of art!

8. Albes, Bangor

Again recommended on the NI Business page, this 100% gluten free bakery offers lots of lovely treats. We have trip planned to Bangor soon to try out!

9. The Brownie Barn, Carnmoney

Offering lots of treats with gluten free options, you can also pre-order your celebration snacks to ensure you don't miss out!

10. Tullyglass Hotel, Ballymena

We've found, in general that hotels are really well equipped to manage gluten free requests. C loves his roast dinners from the Sunday carvery, and one of the tastiest he's had was at the Tullyglass Hotel.

We're sure there are many more establishments going above and beyond for their gluten free customers. Do you have any you'd like to share with us? Please post them below!
